Most people relaxed after they took out a policy with the Insurers, but not Wendell. He was as pusillanimous as they come, so much so that street kids had replaced “chicken” for “Wendell” in their slang. Anyone that knew Wendell and how he made his living would often lay awake at night trying to figure out what would make a craven like him turn to a life of high profile crime. He wasn't the best in the business, and his reputation for cowardice prevented him from being recruited for more sensitive jobs, yet he was efficient at what he did, and when properly motivated he would make good on his contracts.
When news floated through the Underground that a well organized group of mercenaries were offering to provide incarceration insurance Wendell was naturally the first one to contact them. He didn't even look at the price, his only concern was keeping himself out of the prison system at any cost. At first it was understandable that he would still be nervous; no one actually knew if the Insurers would be able to fulfill their contractual obligations. No one had dared tried what they offered, but when they were called to action on four different occasions they proved they were not only willing but capable.
Those first four success stories spread through the Underground with a quiet speed that was alarming in its swiftness and its stealth. It did not take long before the Insurers had their hands full fulfilling all their policies as the seedier elements of society were emboldened by their newfound protection. After a year of operation Wendell was the only policy holder who had yet to collect. Rumors began to spread that he did not trust the Insurers despite his policy with them. At this Wendell's craven nature reared its ugly head, tickling his brain with thoughts of losing his policy due to these rumors.
In a rare act of haste Wendell took a job and hurried to execute it, hoping to display a new bold attitude to his fellow criminals. Whether it was his haste or his false bravado which caused him to trip alarms even a rookie could avoid the end result was the same. The authorities arrived to find a rather tubby man in the fetal position, reeking of his own urine. They incapacitated him then locked him in the back of their vehicle.
He's now on his way to prison, and from his records this will not be his first time there. I would let him enjoy more of the ride, but he has a policy with the Insurers, and as one of their contract agents it is my duty to fulfill the policy and relieve him of his bondage. Maybe after he's free he'll get more of a backbone, regardless, this little incident will hopefully secure him as a permanent client.
